Motorcycle Safety-Something That You Must Focus on If You Ride

Any motorcycle rider will tell you that it is quite exhilarating to ride, with the wind in your face, and the world at your back. Every rider will also tell you, that while it is a great feeling, you can’t get so caught up in it that you lose sight of what is important, safety. Being involved in a motorcycle wreck is certainly no fun, for anyone. In the blink of an eye, you could be seriously injured, or even killed. You have very little protection when you are on a motorcycle, no airbags, no seatbelt, just air. Whatever you hit, you will hit with your bike and your body, and there will be little there to cushion you against the damage.

Many wrecks that occur with passenger vehicles and motorcycles are caused by the other driver not seeing the motorcycle, and inadvertently hitting it. This is very common with large vehicles as well, particularly vans and trucks, as they often have major blind spots anyway, and it is difficult to see a small motorcycle when you are in such a large vehicle, especially if the sun is glaring, or it is nighttime.

If you are the driver of a passenger vehicle on the road, make certain that you are on the lookout for other drivers, particularly those on motorcycles. Before you change lanes, or pull into traffic, make certain you look, and then look again.

Remember that if you drive a motorcycle on the streets, you have to learn to be on the lookout for other drivers. You really do have to be a defensive driver, rather than offensive. Don’t pass cars or trucks in no passing zones, or on the side of the road, and don’t weave in and out of traffic, as this will only one day lead to a wreck, one that could claim your life, or someone else’s.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while it can be fun to ride your motorcycle in a pack with your friends, it isn’t well advised. You shouldn’t ride side by side, and you should pay extra attention to what you are doing, as one mistake could cause everyone to get hurt. Remember to obey the posted speed limits, and don’t do anything foolish while on the road.

Make certain that you wear protective gear at all times when you are on your motorcycle. This includes not only a helmet, but also eye protection as well. Road debris flying into your eyes could cause you to lose control, wreck, and get injured, so this is important.

Wear clothing that can offer you some protection in the case of a wreck, or flying debris from the road. When riding at night, make certain you always wear clothing that can be seen easily, and that you have a working headlight.

Road conditions are also a major danger to motorcycle riders, particularly areas that are littered with debris, such as sand, water, glass, etc. Hitting even a small object while on your motorcycle could cause you to lose control, so you really do have to pay close attention at all times.
